Adoption Search Resources
I am adopted and I have been searching for my past. My search started with
trying to get a Here are some of the sites that I have
used, as well as some sites with information for adoptees who are thinking
about searching for their origins. I highly recommend Randy Sullivan's
article in RS (last link).
September 2001. I have completed my search. If this is of interest to
you, please
-
Bastard Nation
- an adoptee's rights organization.
- The
California Adoptee's Listserve
- A listserve is an email reflector; similar to a bulletin board, but using
email. Like an internet news group, but without all the spam. This list
is for adoptees with a California connection. You must be one of the adoption
triad: adoptee, b-mom, b-dad). Use IE to access this site. Contact
(listowner) directly if the link doesn't work.
-
Tina's
adoption site - Lots of good stuff!
-
VitalSearch
Vital Records
- search information for the United States
-
RootsWeb
- a good place to
start your search
- The
California Birth Index
- 1905-1995. This is where I started my search (RootsWeb).
.br
Dec 2001: This database is now off line due to privacy concerns and impending legislation in the state of California.
- The
California Birth Index (via VitalSearch)
- 1905-1995. Select the free search from
this site. This accesses the same data as above, but uses an
search engine. The user-interface is more difficult, but also more selective.
-
California Death Index
- on RootsWeb
-
California Death Index
- from Vitalsearch. The user interface is unforgiving.
Here's the
explanation
for it.
-
Social Security Death Index
- From your favorite(?) uncle!
-
Hawaii Resources
- Randy Sullivan's excellent
story,
Bastard Chronicles
in Rolling Stone magazine (RS#862-863, Feb and Mar 2001), on Helen Hill
and the adoptee's rights movement, and the origins and ultimate passing
of the Oregon Open Records law. The article is no longer acessible via the web, but
your local public library likely has it.

Port Townsend Links
Port Townsend is a lovely Victorian town on the Olympic Peninsula. There
are many Bed & Breakfast Inns as well as shops and (of course) restaurants.
To the north of town is Fort Worden, once part of the defense network for
Puget Sound, now home to Centrum and a state park. We like it there.
