Coral reefs are often called "the rainforests of the sea" because of the quantity and diversity of life they support, and because they are highly sensitive and threatened ecosystems. Building on the success of DK’s Rainforest, this unique pictorial celebration of the worlds reefs progresses through an ecological chain that goes from algae, sponges, and mollusks to the thousands of fishes that make their homes there. This vivid collection of photographs, from underwater photography collective Scubazoo, reveals reefs as they’ve never been seen before.

Scubazoo is a dedicated team of divers, photographers, marine biologists, and conservationists, who have devoted their lives to the filming and preservation of reefs worldwide. Their work includes filming for productions broadcast on National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, BBC, and NBC News. The group is based in Sabah, on the island of Borneo. Scubazoo works with the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace International, the Reef Environmental Education Fund, and the Shark Trust.

-Features reefs worldwide, from Southeast Asia to the Red Sea and Hawaii
-Captions identify plant and animal life and quotes give additional background information
-Photographic narratives demonstrate how reefs live/die, and how creatures depend on them
-Published in cooperation with the American Museum of Natural History

Poisonous and Venomous Marine Animals

When my father retired from the US Navy, a couple of great books followed him home, which he has since passed on to me.

I have great doubts that even a small portion of the knowledge contained in these books are available to most hospitals today -

So if you even think you have been stung, bitten or possibly ingested something from a poisonous marine animal...give me a quick PM and I will look up characteristics and possible treatment for you.

I have seen copies of these books on Ebay now and then. Also at alibris.com (used books)...

An interesting, if not beneficial, pair of books.

With new HD DVD player I got received this HD disk as part of promotion. HD Plasma TV not arriving till tomorrow, but could play it on my computer DVD.

My diving days might just be over.

Why spend all the $ and go thru all the bother (except that is part of the fun) to travel to odd places in the world, when I can just travel now from my living room.

The technology of video and photography has now made it possible to experience all the wonder and beauty of diving on a coral reef right from your living room easy chair. The mind-boggling beauty - which the brain cannot comprehend (or "remember") - (hence why we keep returning) - is right here! --- For some reason, the phrase, "...Looking into the Eye of God..." always comes to me when diving...(get same feeling when looking down into Grand Canyon) --- the awesome vision shows just how insignificant we really are.

Anyway...here is first dive experience on this HD DVD...

note: pics don't do near justice to the actual resolution on screen. - but will give idea anyway.
